So, another year has passed and here I am not letting you guys know what's been going on for me for the last half of it. Sorry about that! Let's begin from August where I left off. First up, I'd like you to meet my newest roommate, Sawyer.

During the first week of August my sis Carolyn & I got looking at the Humane Society's website and saw there was an abundence of kitties up for adoption. Honestly, Sawyer first caught our eye because we had just finished watching LOST, haha!

At first our old cat, Meem, had a hard time adjusting to the new cat, but in time they managed to work things out. :)

In September, I flew down to Dallas, TX to meet up with my wirepop buddy Kristen McGuire (of the webcomic "Enchanted"). Together, we took on AnimeFest 2011 and shared some good laughs. Her & her husband, Greg, and their two little girls were so good to me while I visited and I am forever grateful for their kindness!

After Dallas, I hopped a bus to Austin TX where I stayed with my online friend of 10 (plus!) years, 'Sabel. It was so awesome to finally meet her after all these years, and the pile of old, ugly drawings I sent her over those years came back to haunt me, haha! Most memorably we goofed around at the Texas Capitol building, had tempura fried icecream at a sushi place called "Mikado", cooled off at the Schlitterbahn Water park, and drove waaaaaay outta town to get some of the best beef jerky.

Returning to the red soils of Prince Edward Island once again, I prepared for a "duel" book launch with my friend Christina that was happening in October. (I misspelled "dual" for "duel" on our posters... But I think it gave the event an edge :))

Christina had just finished writing and self publishing her own novel Magic High around the time In the Air was being published, so we thought combining our release parties would be a fun idea. The event was held at Timothy's World Coffee in Charlottetown, and the turnout was better than either of us expected!

November then rolled around and while I was lurking on Kate Beaton's Hark! A Vagrant! webcomic, I saw that she posted about a book signing in Halifax right on my birthday! My boyfriend, Troy, and I took the 3-hour trek over to Strange Adventures comic shop to meet Kate, and awesomely enough, we ended up being first in line! (best birthday gift ever since the lineup was craaaaay-zay long!)

Later in the evening after we got our books all signed up, Troy took me down by the water where, to my suspicion, he got down on one knee and pulled out a ring! Sorry Kate, but at that moment this had become the best birthday gift ever - an engagement ring from the man I love!

Now on top of everything else, I'm making wedding plans for next year. I'm really happy about everything that happened to me this year, and I'm looking forward to an amazing 2012!

Speaking of things not shared on this blog about 2011, I've mentioned before that I've begun a new comic project. It is another personal project resurrected from some vague ideas I had back in high school (like In the Air) and it follows the misadventures of Tatian (pronounced ta-shin) Elfiore, a very reluctant and lazy prince from the kingdom of Elvania. The working title of the comic is "Halls of the Turnip King".

I'm going to keep the plot a mystery, but it's one self-contained story in one book. The script is 15 pages long (with things constantly being added/deleted as I come to the drawing). Currently I'm drawing from page 7 of the script, and the grand total of pages drawn and inked so far is 40. I'm planning on making this a full colour book, and so far 10 colour pages have been completed. I'm estimating the book to be anywhere from 115-130 pages long.

The comic is pure comedy, with a cast of colourful characters (or, at least, I'm hoping you'll find them colourful!) I wanted to draw a comic with a completely different feel than In the Air and so far I'm loving the change.

In the Air will resume updates sometime in 2012. I've gotten some writing done for book 2, jotting down a basic outline of what I'd like to cover in the next 200 pages of the story. Until then, I'll balance my time with more Halls of the Turnip King as well as looking for some actual paying work (getting a job is my New Year's resolution)!

I'll keep you posted on the progress of HOTTK and ITA. Please look forward to it!

K4 Complete

K#4 is officially finished! Things went a lot smoother this issue, and I'm a lot happier with the artwork than in the previous comics. I suspect#5 is just around the corner, seeing as last year I only had the month of May inbetween issues 2 & 3. So I've decided to go full-steam ahead on a brand spankin' new comic project of my very own while I had the chance!

This will be the last of my redrawn pages (for now ;)) In 2001 (popular year for these old pages!) I replaced the first few chapters, and this is how I wrote the story at that time. The original plot from 1998 was that Sandra got whisked away to the other planet after her skating lesson by a "cat" in disguise (Ary). xD

...and in with the "new old"! Here's another recreated page from 2001. In this chapter, Sandra's sister (who doesn't exist in In the Air) tricks Sandra into going on a date with a guy named Paul. Sandra only agreed to go because she thought her sis was hooking her up with her crush. Jacob & Tailor tag along to attempt to torment Sandra. Sandra is at least thankful that they were going to a movie she wanted to see.

*drumrolls* Aaaand! The original page from 2001: (Tailor doesn't look a thing like he's supposed to!! For fun, I even recreated the bullies' hairstyles)

Canada Reads, the nation's "Battle of the Books", has come in with a disappointing start for me. 4 of the 5 panelists voted Jeff Lemire's "Essex County" out after one round. Why? Because it is not a real novel - it has more pictures than words - you can read it in an hour. Graphic novels have the literary equivilance of a twitter news feed.

I agree that novels and graphic novels are different mediums, but Essex County was on the polls for a reason, and the Canadian public voted it onto the list of top 5 Canadian novels for a reason.
Sara Quin was the panelist who was defending Essex County, and I agree with her statement, "I'm disappointed, but not surprised".

I usually don't like ranting on my blog, but it has been my dream since childhood to become a comics creator. I'm struggling, like so many others with the same dream, to tell stories in a medium I love so that I can share it with the world. Well, at least the part of the world that will have it ;). I think that no matter how you choose to tell your story - whether it be film, poetry, painting, word of mouth, graphic novel or written novel - every medium should be respected if they have content of value.

If you're going to hold a competition with the subtitle "Battle of the Books", and there are both written and graphic novels in the running, the judges shouldn't be allowed to dismiss one over the other based on how many words the book contains if the words chosen are meaningful.

Doodles from yesterday's trip to the coffee shop. For some reason I was fixated on drawing ridiculous Garfield pictures. He pretty much just looks like an Aryfied-Garfield hybrid.

As you can see, my Odies are top-notch.

The top Garfield in this one is loosely based on my cat Meem.

One thing I don't understand about the modern Garfield strips (aside from why they're still running), is why Garfield's feet are now bigger than, well, the rest of him? Is he a fat cat or a foot cat? I'm not sure I understand his character anymore. My example drawing of his new look is not very skilled, haha!

Adventures in Painting

For the past few days, I've been working on a commissioned painting. However, it was a painting style I haven't done before - it was to be painted on a bedroom wall! All Sophia wanted for Christmas was for her bedroom to look like a barn, with a horse peeking out a window in the corner. So I took up the challenge and did the painting. :)

I can't draw things on a large scale very well, so this projector helped me.

And there it is! The painting is complete!

Sophia and her mother Roey are happy with the results!

All in all, it took maybe 18 hours (over 4 days). Now, I've got one other project to *finally* finish, and have 3 more pages to tone before In the Air chapter 5 is done! Gah! I gotta get cracking!

I've been doodling and sketching lots lately, but most of it is concept art on a project I'm not ready to share online yet. In the Air ch05 is, this time for serious(!), almost done. I rewrote the ending probably 3 times now, and am finally happy with how book 1 is going to end. Living With It!

After quite a wait, I've finally recieved my copies of "K: Living With It!" issues 2&3. Issue 2 was drawn in March/April of this year, and issue 3 June/July. (Issue 1 was done last winter, but I'm a bit embarrassed of that one - the drawings were so bad!! <-self concious)

To my knowledge, the comics are available to children with hemophilia and their siblings through a free subscription.

Each issue is 12 pages long, and follows the life of a 16(?) year old boy named K who has hemophilia. He wants to join the school sports team, but he fears his parents will deny him a chance to join the basketball team since they are so over protective.

The comic is written by a writer from Montreal named Michael Libling.

I hired my friend to help with colouring for issue 3 because I was feeling a little overworked. Thanks for coming to my rescue, Audrey!

...and that's that! Haven't heard word yet about issue 4, so I've gotta do as much In the Air as I can before then..!!! Hee hee.

Back At 'Em!

*waves timidly* Hey guys! Here I am again after a bit of a disappearance. Not many new drawings to show at the moment, for I am getting over a common artist spell of "Why do I do these terrible drawings?! I'm no good and it's not getting better!!". I couldn't take a pencil to paper without feeling discouraged, hence I avoided the net for a while so that I'd spare you from my whining.

I'm feeling the tail end of it now, and some new secret projects are starting to bubble forth in my mind. For the first time in a while, I'm getting really excited to draw comics! I may disappear again from my blog, but hopefully I'll be able to create some sketches to share with you here soon. I hope you're all doing well and taking care!

Word Up!

Hey all! I arrived home yesterday from my trip to Halifax. I had a blast! The reason for the trip? Dave Sim: The Last Signing at Strange Adventures comics was reason #1, and reason #2 was "Word on the Street"
First off, here is a little bit about Dave Sim's last signing on Friday. My boyfriend Troy is a HUGE fan of Cerebus, Dave's main comic project spanning from 1977-2004. I went having not read a single issue. O__O; Now I need to go fix that...

The signing was scheduled from 10pm-12am, but Dave took his time telling stories and talking with everyone who came up, so it ended up going on until 4:30am. It was quite a test of endurance, and I was ready to pass out by the end of it. I made it 'til 3, when we were up, and I'm glad that I stuck it out. Dave was a really nice guy, and it felt good to have him take his time to chat with us while he signed our books.

The next night was the Glamourpuss formal party at The Economy Shoe Shop. I always love an excuse to get fancy!! This is us trying to look all "hollywood"

Dave got to work making name tags for everyone. He was also getting videos of the ladies proclaiming that they loved Glamourpuss more than ___ (insert item of fashion here). I got it messed up and stated that I loved Glamourpuss more than my cat Meem. So yeah, if you keep track of Cerebus TV, you may someday see me making a fool of myself on camera (it happens a lot, actually)

Sunday had us busy with the "Word on the Street" event. It was only one day from 11am-6pm, but I managed to pass out 85% of my preview books and even sell a few buttons!

Many people gave me good words and comments, which is good to hear since I tend to get too down on myself about my work. This lovely lady above is Rej, who seemed really excited to pick up a copy for herself and a friend. Thanks, Rej!

Mike and Blair Kitchen were our neighbours for the event. It was great seeing them again! We even managed to get a collab pic together, which we lovingly titled "Big Guns"

We had lots of time between events to take in the city of Halifax, which was amazing! I've been there twice before, but I never did get to see too much of it until now. The waterfront was my favourite place. It was like the (much) older brother to our waterfront in Charlottetown.

Just finished watching Sailor Moon R with my sis. I've probably mentioned this on the net somewhere before, but when I was a kid, Sailor Moon was like, the coolest thing ever to me. I totally obsessed over it during my elementary school days. Needless to say, it still holds a special place in my heart. It was what inspired me to do comics, after all! Anyways, onto my most awesomest drawings of my Sailor Senshi misadventures - that I whipped up about 15 minutes ago. Sailor Freelancer? I'm sure that won't stick.

FanExpo 2010

I survived FanExpo 2010!! The experience was up and down for me. Huge crowds with very little interest in indy comics, which was a little disheartening at first. I eventually broke out of my shell and wandered around to the other occupants of artist alley/indy press and met a few awesome people and did some trades. Into the second day, people actually started to stop by and chat. I was happy that my friends Cassie, James, and Emily even took the time to find my table and say hi. Thinking back, I can't blame people for passing by for the first bit - there was so much to look at! I admit to feeling a little lightheaded just from browsing the dealer's room!

A shot of the table during working hours. :) I got a pack of sketch cards from Lance, and I ended up just doodling on them all weekend. I even managed to sell a couple! I was suprised when one guy came back showing me how he made my sketch card image the background on his phone!

You never have a shortage of plushies at con! I loves them :)

So, all in all, FanExpo 2010 was a good experience! There were some downs, but also an over abundance of ups! I'm definitley glad to be back on the red soil of PEI though. I am such a home body! Gonna get back to my country girl roots and run around in a corn field maze today!! Sweet.

Live streaming is done :) I was on there for 3 hours and got my page inked! It was neat, I think I'll definitely go live again. It kept me focused since I was being watched. Doing work from home all day with no supervision leads to so much distraction, procrastination, and general goofing around...

Hey all! Sorry for the lack of updates. There isn't much time to doodle lately, as most of the time I'm working on K: Living with It or In the Air. I'm freaking a little bit as I'm trying to get both comics done for the end of the month, and I'm feeling a little depressed which doesn't help anything. Seems this time of year, when it gets really hot and muggy, always has the same effect on me. I'm trying to be positive and just keep plugging along, but...*sigh*

Anyways, this doodle was done on my bus ride up to Montreal last month. I took in some of the jazz festival and got to see Emilie Simon live! It was such a good time!! In this pic, she's supposed to be sitting on a tire, but the bus started driving again before I could finish.

My buttons for FanExpo have arrived! I just went to pick them up and here are the results:

I am a happy customer!! Each button is 1.25", and they will be sold in packs based on series as well as individually. Pricing isn't down solid, so I'll get back to that closer to the convention. For people who can't make it to FanExpo and want some buttons, I'll try to get a store set up online so you can order some. :)

The buttons were ordered from SixCentPress.com. Great site for buttons! Located in Vancouver BC, they were quick with my order, great with communication, have an awesome print quality, and are well priced! If you're thinking of printing up buttons of your own, I highly recommend these guys!

Sneak peek at a page of In the Air chapter 5! This will be the final chapter for ITA book 1, which I'm planning on getting printed up for the end of August!!

I'm going to FanExpo, peoples!! (Which is why I need to get the book printed for August :)) The plane tickets are booked, the hostel is arranged, and I've got a table in the indy press/artist alley area!! My friend Christina Gaudet is joining me and will be showing off her lovely comics Never, Hallhogs, and Noobs!!

Poking at "In the Air" pages lately, with the hopes of starting it back up again on wirepop come the end of the month. Almost finished with 7 pages! Working on tomorrow's Ary, trying to brainstorm for a parade float design, and anticipating the beginning of "K: Living with It!" issue 3!

Hey all! Hope you're doing well! Sorry for letting things die around here..! I have so much more to say about TCAF and so much work to do to get ready for FanExpo! My table application has been ACCEPTED! and now it's a matter of getting a bunch of merch made up! So much drawing to be had! And what do I do? Sit around the house and do nothing! Oh noes! I need a kick in the butt!!

Progress on In the Air, chapter 5: Cover page inked, thumbnails for pages 1-8 thumbnailed, and the very beginnings of pencils done on page 1!! I need to be more disciplined!! *Rolls up sleeves!* Wish me luck!!

Again, I steal all my pics from facebook... I really gotta take pictures of my own!! Well, here I am at TCAF sitting around waiting for my laptop to get re-juiced, so I'm taking a moment to post and letcha know how things are going!!

I'm having a BLAST here - so much to do and see!! Predictably, one of our first stops was Silver Snail comic shop, where I met this lovely lady:

Here's a candid shot our friend PJ took of us at our table. Great to see him again! We also had a visit from another fellow Trapeze coworker, Ben Thomas. As well, I met Faith Erin Hicks who also has a history of working at Trapeze! I always feel a bit creepy when I come up to someone and start acting familiar because of something vague like that (Erin and I worked at Trapeze at different times)

Me in all my fat pony tshirt glory! I met Kate Beaton, but I always feel so intimidated by big names, so I slunk away pretty fast though I really wanted to talk to her! I live with many regrets. Well, she's here again today, we'll have to have some Maritime-living small talk!! (if I get up the nerve..!!)
And look! LOOK! We bumped into a Canadian randomly on the street!! No kiddin', eh? Natasha Kudashkina, another fellow Trapezian, just got her Canadian citizenship on Friday, and we had the great luck of meeting her randomly on the streets of Toronto to celebrate together!!

Congratulations, Natasha!! I laugh at how gray I am here and how bright Natasha is! We were joking here that I looked like a poor little homeless boy!! I was under the dilusion that Toronto MUST be warmer than PEI, and forgot to bring a jacket! Thanks again Troy for letting me borrow yours!! :D

So as of Friday, I am officially done issue 2 of that freelance project I was talking about ("K:Living With it!") It feels so good to be free and to actually get out of the house again!! So, what is the first thing I do with my freedom? I attempt to clean my room!! It was MUCH overdue! Lots to go through since I am the biggest pack-rat...

Anyways, while tearing my room apart, I came across this old picture that I thought I'd share:

I thought for sure I had given this away to one of my friends, but it was hidden with my old graphic design projects (which I rarely look at 'cause they're so awful. I was the worst student!) Sandra had been scanned before, but I put an ugly blur filter over it, which I regretted. Tisha was scanned before too, but had been badly cropped. So, here's the WHOLE piece in all it's glory!!

...though Sen isn't gonna be Earth anymore... >___> This was drawn in early 2007.

Might post some other interesting finds later :D I unearthed 14 sketchbooks (spanning from 2005 to present) so I'm sure I'll find something weird and/or interesting to share...!

Only a few days left before my deadline! I've been busting my butt for the last month and a half on it, but I'm actually satisfied with the way it's looking, which is a big deal! I'm the worst critic of my own work. With so little time left, you may be asking, "what are you doing on blogger then?! Get back to work and finish your project!!" Well, I'm asking myself the same thing... Hm...

I did squeeze in a little time to doodle during the last little while, and I thought I'd quickly post 'em here! Trying to improve drawing different faces/hair by drawing out of magazines. Though all these are white women. Next time I'll have to concentrate on different races!

The 2010 edition of the Toronto Comic Art Festival is almost here! Will you be in the Toronto area from May 8th to 9th? Then stop by the Toronto Reference Library and check this event out!! I won't have a table, but I'll be keeping Troy Little company at his! As it has turned out, my idea to have buttons at the event is out (ran outta time!!) but I'll be handing out free preview books for IN THE AIR and ARY INSPIRES, as well as some bookmarks and stickers!! Hey everyone! I'm still (barely) alive!! So much going on! Still plugging away at my freelance comic! Had a hard time last week since my client was trying to push my deadline to be sooner than what was agreed upon. I managed to convince him to keep the deadline where it was originally (April 30th). However, I still foresee many sleepless nights! Oh my! Gonna have to keep the coffee brewing all day long in case of emergencies! On the positive side, I can now focus fully on this comic. That little freelance job with Trapeze in March is now over, so no more of this 9:00am-5:00pm at the office, and 6:00pm-1:00am drawing the comic!

Also, on top of that, there is drama involving a sister of mine returning home. Luckily it's been decided that she'll stay with my parents. Don't think I could've handled having her at my apartment while I'm working from home with this stressful deadline.

During the Easter weekend, I did allow myself some time enjoy the beautiful weather we've been having. Spring is finally here, people!!

And about time! Things have been made to the theme of "In the Air", since I've decided to get serious about making the comic available in print form! My goal was to have it done and ready for sale by May, though I'm thinking now that may be a little ambitious! A couple freelance projects have popped up that need to take top priority. But "In the Air" WILL see print this year! Book 1 will include chapters 1-5, bonus art, in a mix of colour and black and white pages. Fingers crossed for this summer..!

Been trying to keep on top of comic work now that I've got lots of free time! I've been out to the coffee shops a couple days this week to get some pencilling/thumbnailing done. The end of chapter 4 is in sight, making it a total of 29 pages!! I was just doing some inking a minute ago as well. Think I'll get to sleep after updating here. :)

I've been trying to doodle more too, and I've got some stuff to scan. I'm a lazy person though, and I only have these two to show you for now (gotta get kick my butt to scan some more!)
